Ford Motors is one of the premier names in the American automobile industry. Some might argue that Ford Motors is the premier name in the industry. Certainly, the company’s reputation for high-quality and high-performance vehicles is near legendary. It is no surprise, therefore, that the Ford SUV models reflect that reputation. The company’s dedication to excellence is a legacy that has been consistently maintained from the first days, from the Ford Model-T, to the newest Ford SUV, sports car, vans, and street car models. Arguably, some of the company’s finest work appears in their SUV marques: the Ford Expedition, the Ford Escape, and the Ford Edge.

The premier Ford SUV line, arguably, is the famed Ford Expedition. Easily one of the best designed SUVs around, the Expedition is also one of Ford Motors’ best-selling automobiles to date. With a 300 horsepower, 3-valve engine, it easily outpowers any comparable model from the company’s rivals. The rear wheel drive system also grants it additional driving flexibility in dry conditions and over rough terrain, in keeping with the notion that SUVs are used for outdoor driving. Capable of fitting up to eight people comfortably, the sacrifice of interior room for the rear wheel drive configuration is not clearly felt in the Expedition. Perhaps the only advantage the Expedition’s competitors have is the fact that the Expedition has a higher price. Though, one can argue that the Ford Expedition’s higher price is offset by the superior engine and drive configuration.

Following up the Expedition is the Ford Escape — another example of Ford SUV models having excellent quality and having a design that bears the end-user in mind. The Escape is usually outfitted with a 200 horsepower V6 engine, though some variants have been known to use a 153 horsepower I4 engine instead. Since being introduced in 2001, the Escape has consistently been given all-wheel drive configurations, which gives better traction control for those tight, high-speed turns. The configuration also affords better stability at high speeds over rough terrain, making the configuration ideal for competitions such as the Le Mans 24 or the Indy 500. While the likelihood of seeing a stock Ford Escape in a race like those mentioned above is yet to be anticipated, that does not take away from the car’s ability to handle some of the toughest terrain an SUV can ever be driven through.

Finally, there is the latest addition to the Ford SUV line, the Ford Edge. The Ford Edge car for sale is equipped with the new Duratec 35 engine, which allows the SUV to go to a maximum of 265 horsepower; though, there are varieties estimated of reaching up to 300 horsepower once certain features, like direct fuel injection, are added into the design. The Edge was made to bridge the gap between a van and a traditional SUV, so the Edge incorporates design elements from both types of cars. The Edge models, unlike the Expedition and Escape, offer a degree of flexibility with regards the drive configuration. At the moment, the Ford Edge can either be all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Although slightly smaller than a van and slightly less capable of handling rough terrain than an SUV, the Ford Edge still manages to perform tasks of both vans and SUVs on an acceptable level.

Ford Motors clearly has not skimped out on quality with regards the design of their new Ford SUV models. The three listed above, the Expedition, the Escape, and the Edge, all have their individual advantages and disadvantages but the mark of excellence in design and quality in production is unmistakable. With Ford SUV models like the ones mentioned above, Ford Motors has a definite edge over other manufacturers.

Ford Motor Co.’s president of the Americas, Mark Fields, on Tuesday said Ford would be dedicated to making its future vehicles “meet or beat the competition in fuel economy in the face of $4-a-gallon gasoline, weak consumer confidence and plunging auto sales.

Fields noted that July auto sales have been no better than they were in June, when they plummeted 18% industrywide. The first half of the year was the worst sales level in the United States in 15 years, and Ford’s sales for the year are off 14%, mostly because of falling truck sales.

The event was held just days before Ford is expected to post significant second-quarter losses and further restructuring of its unprofitable North American operations. Ford has said it will bring fuel-efficient models from Europe as it retools its North American lineup. The Associated Press reported that Ford will bring six small vehicles from overseas. Ford will move assembly of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator from the Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. Michigan Truck will be retooled to make the Focus compact car, according to the New York Times.

Ford also delayed addition of a third shift at its Oakville, Ontario, plant, surprising 350 would-be workers, who were to start training next week, the Courier-Journal reported. The plant makes the Ford Edge, Ford Flex and Lincoln MKX crossovers — a fast-growing segment as consumers seek fuel-efficient alternatives to pickups and truck-based SUVs.

While new hires at the Oakville plant find themselves on hold, the factory still will absorb 160 workers laid off from Ford in Windsor, Ontario, said spokeswoman Lauren More.

Ford is cutting production of trucks in response to slumping sales. When asked when Ford thought the economy might bottom out or rebound, Fields did not have an answer.

“We don’t know,” said Fields, who was at a centennial celebration for the Model T, which has attracted thousands of collectors and fans to a sprawling field in Wayne County, Ind.

Founder Henry Ford started building the Model T in 1908, and the vehicle helped establish Ford Motor Co. and revolutionize modern society.

Fields told a crowd of attendees and journalists that Ford would be rolling out its EcoBoost technology, which uses gasoline injection and turbocharging to improve the efficiency of a regular gas engine.

Ford is planning to sell 500,000 engines with the new technology annually within four years, company spokesman Said Deep said.

Fields said that Ford’s new objectives to focus on small cars and environmentally friendly technologies were consistent with the principles of Henry Ford and his Model T, which was capable of running on ethanol and gasoline.

Fields declined to answer questions about Ford’s latest restructuring plan.

When asked about reports that Ford might be launching a new plan for Mercury, the company’s long-ailing premium brand, which is positioned between the mainstream Ford and luxury Lincoln nameplates, Fields defended the brand for attracting customers who are not lured by the Ford name.

Through June, Mercury sales were down 24% compared with the same period a year ago. Customers bought 72,595 Mercury vehicles through March.

The Courier-Journal also reported that the Louisville Assembly Plant is being retooled for vehicles smaller than the Explorer midsize SUV. Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski declined comment.

Ford chief executive officer Alan Mulally’s crisis is Mazda CEO Hisakazu Imaki’s opportunity.

The two men are partners in moving the second-largest US automaker away from the trucks and large sport-utility vehicles consumers are shunning in the face of $US4-a-gallon gasoline. Ford, which saved Mazda from near-bankruptcy 12 years ago, owns a third of the Hiroshima-based company, Japan’s fifth-largest automaker.

Ford’s Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize sedans, based on the Mazda6 and rated at up to 29 highway miles per gallon, were the Dearborn, Michigan-based company’s only models to gain US sales last month. Half of the automaker’s cars will be based on the designs of its Japanese affiliate by 2010, up from 43% this year, according to CSM Worldwide, a Northville, Michigan-based automotive-consulting firm.

“Mazda is attractive now,” said Masayuki Kubota, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments in Tokyo, who oversees the equivalent of $US1.7 billion, including the automaker’s shares.

“There’s a flood of demand for small cars in the US right now and Mazda gains from Ford’s need for its development expertise.”

The Japanese company is saving about 12 billion yen ($US111.4 million) a year through joint development with Ford, according to Credit Suisse Group senior analyst Koji Endo.

That amount will rise as cooperation increases, he said. Mazda plans to spend 115 billion yen on research and development in the year ending next March.

The shares may rise to 700 yen within 12 months, according to Endo, approaching their 16-month high of 718 yen in June 2007. Ten analysts in a Bloomberg survey recommend buying, seven say to hold, and two advise selling.

Mazda climbed 1.6% to 620 yen in Tokyo Stock Exchange trading yesterday, making Ford’s stake worth $US2.73 billion. The 11% gain this year makes it the best-performing Japanese automaker. A rise to Endo’s target price would add about $US355 million to the value of Ford’s investment.

Mazda plans to increase its models’ fuel economy by an average of 30% in the next seven years by making vehicles lighter and developing thriftier engines. The quest for efficiency is spurring cooperation between Mulally and Imaki.

Ford will make a small Fiesta model based on a Mazda design in India as early as 2009, according to CSM, and the two companies will build autos at a jointly owned Thai plant next year.

The Japanese carmaker will also supply Ford with redesigns for the Fusion sedan and Edge crossover wagon to be built in the US

Car makers General Motors (GM) and Ford have reported strong growth in the first half of this year in China, the world’s second largest vehicle market after the US, despite auto sales downturn in their home market.

The US’ largest automaker GM, said it sold 590,126 vehicles in the first six months, posting a 12.7 per cent rise over the same period a year earlier.

Ford said its sales rose 21 per cent from the year earlier period to 172,411 units. This included passenger cars produced by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd., a joint venture of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd, a Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Company, which rose 25 per cent to 116,903 units.

Ford’s China sales grew a robust 30 per cent last year but the 21 per cent rise is still much stronger than in North America where there is a downturn for automakers.

Kevin E Wale, President of GM China, said the company’s multi-brand strategy was taking effect with new models of brands such as Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and Wuling receiving good “feedback” from Chinese consumers, official Xinhua news agency said.

Major US, European and Asian automakers have been investing heavily and competing aggressively in China, where sales are expanding at double-digit rates.

The soaring international oil prices have not had much impact on auto sales in China where the fuel prices are government regulated and kept at lower levels.

Japan’s Honda Motor (China) Investment Co. Ltd, said its sales in China rose 21.3 percent year-on-year to 186,991 vehicles during the first half of 2008.

The growth rate exceeded that in its home market and other overseas markets. In the first six months, Honda’s sales shrank in Japan and grew merely 4.1 per cent in the United States - its biggest overseas market.

Despite the mounting production cost and rising oil prices, the Chinese auto market would continue booming, Zhu Linjie, an official with the Honda China company was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

He said Honda was expecting 20 per cent annual sales growth this year in China - its fastest growing market worldwide.

The US automobile giant Ford Motor Co proposes to launch its small car for the Indian market by 2010 and will set up a new unit soon to manufacture engines, top officials said on Thursday.

“Small car segment holds 75 per cent in Indian market and when we launch the small car that’s when the real volumes will come in,” Ford India managing director and president Michael Boneham told media at the launch of the company’s new car.

He also said Ford’s new engine manufacturing facility will be set up in 2009-10 with a capacity of 250,000 units per year. “The plant will fulfill the entire domestic demand and will also cater to the needs for ford in the Asia Pacific region.”

The company also launched a new sports variant of the mid-sized sedan here Thursday - the Ford Fiesta S that clocks 0-100 km in 11 seconds. Also launched was an upgraded SXI variant of the Fiesta featuring new front grille and head lamps.

U.S. auto sales in May brought the starkest signs yet that gas prices have dramatically shifted the market to smaller cars, as the top-selling Ford F-series truck was dethroned by cars from Toyota and Honda and as General Motors announced it was closing four truck and SUV plants after dismal results.

GM said Tuesday its sales fell 28 percent in May compared to a year earlier, with a 37 percent decline in truck and SUV sales and a 14 percent drop in car sales. At the automaker’s annual meeting in Wilmington, Del., Tuesday, CEO Rick Wagoner said GM will close four truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico by 2010, affecting 10,000 jobs.

“We at GM don’t think this is a spike or a temporary shift,” Wagoner said of the drop in truck sales.

Ford’s sales fell 16 percent for the month, while Chrysler LLC’s sales were down 25 percent and Toyota Motor Corp.’s sales slipped 4 percent. Overall sales were down 11 percent compared to last May, according to Autodata Corp.

Honda Motor Co., riding the wave of customers seeking better fuel efficiency, said its sales rose 18 percent; a 36 percent increase in car sales made up for an 8 percent decline in truck and SUV sales.

Nissan Motor Co. said its sales rose 8 percent, with a 19 percent increase in car sales offsetting a 10 percent decline in trucks.

High gas prices, the weak economy and low consumer confidence are taking their toll on larger vehicles. Ford Motor Co. sales chief Jim Farley said small and mid-size cars made up 47 percent of sales in May, up from 34 percent in February.

The shift represents 1.5 million vehicles at Ford.

“May was a watershed month. We are, as an industry, catching up with the breathtaking choices customers are now making,” Farley said in a conference call with media and analysts.

The Toyota Corolla and Camry and Honda Civic and Accord sedans each outsold the F-series truck, which saw monthly sales plummet 31 percent in May to 42,973. F-series trucks have been the best-selling trucks in the U.S. for 31 years and the best-selling vehicles overall for nearly as long.

F-series trucks have also been the best-selling vehicles each month since June 2005, when the Chevrolet Silverado pickup took a brief lead, said Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis for the Power Information Network, a division of J.D. Power. The last time a car topped the monthly sales charts was the Ford Taurus sedan in December 1992, according to Ford’s top U.S. sales analyst George Pipas.

Sean McAlinden, chief economist with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, said the U.S. market will likely look like the European one, where small cars make up nearly 40 percent of sales, in five to ten years. That shift could make it harder for the Detroit Three to win customers, he said.

“Only a few companies ever made really good trucks, but a lot of companies make good little cars,” he said. “The competition level is going to go up, way up.”

Ford’s U.S. car sales were up 3 percent compared with last May, and it sold more than 30,000 Ford Focus small cars for only the second time in the car’s nine-year history. But pickup and SUV sales dropped 26 percent. Farley said the company plans to offer an employee-pricing discount on F-series trucks this summer to clear out inventory before the new F-series arrives this fall.

Ford said last month it plans to slash North American production of trucks and SUVs for the rest of the year. Ford also is planning to lay off salaried workers as part of a restructuring plan that will be detailed next month.

Toyota’s U.S. sales dropped 4 percent for the month, as flat results for cars were dragged down by a 12 percent decline in trucks and SUVs.

Chrysler said car sales fell 33 percent and truck sales were down 22 percent despite an incentive program that lets buyers lock in gas prices at $2.99 per gallon. Chrysler said the decline was mainly due to a 40 percent cutback in sales to rental car companies and other fleets.

Steven Landry, executive vice president for North American sales, said the $2.99 gas incentive has lured people into dealerships and will be continued through July 7. He said between 5 and 10 percent of buyers are choosing the fuel guarantee over other incentives.

Landry said May’s sales figures were sobering for the industry.

“This month is one that particularly lets us look deep into the numbers and determine our game plan for the rest of this year,” he said.

Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of North American sales, said earlier forecasts for an improvement in the second half of the year now look overly optimistic. But GM does think sales are hitting their low point now.

“We still think we’re somewhere near the bottom and we look for a firming up and a gradual recovery beginning in the back half of the year,” he said.

GM shares rose 14 cents to close at $17.58. Ford shares rose 4 cents to $6.68, while Toyota’s U.S. shares fell 22 cents to $102.29.

The Associated Press reports unadjusted figures, calculating the percentage change in the total number of vehicles sold in one month compared with the same month a year earlier. Some automakers report percentages adjusted for sales days. There were 27 sales days last month and 26 in May 2007.
